Alzheimers & Dementia

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. Alzheimer’s is thought by many to be an incurable disease. The disease was first described in the year 1906 by Alois Alzheimer who was a well known German psychiatrist. The disease is named after him.

Alzheimer’s is a disease which is usually seen in people who are above the age of 65 years. However, the disease can occur at a much earlier age as well. In a survey carried out in the year 2006, as many as 26.6 million people across the globe were suffering from this disease. It is predicted that by the year 2050 this number might quadruple.

One of the weird things about Alzheimer’s is the fact that every sufferer of this disease experiences the disease in a unique way. However, many symptoms are common amongst the sufferers. One of the biggest mistakes that most of the people do is the fact that they misunderstand some of the early Alzheimer’s symptoms to age related problems.

The most common symptom of this disease is the memory loss. The sufferer finds it difficult to remember recent facts. The doctors usually do a brain scan in order to detect Alzheimer’s. It can also be diagnosed with the help of cognitive tests and behavioral assessments. The later stage of the disease shows symptoms of mood swings, aggression, irritability and confusion. Language breakdown is another symptom which is seen in people suffering from Alzheimer’s. As the disease starts spreading, the person also experiences long term memory loss problem.

As the disease enters into the later stages, many body functions are lost which eventually leads to the death of that person. The average age or life expectancy after the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is just seven years. However, there have been many cases where the person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s has lived up to fourteen years. Such cases are very rare.

Alzheimer’s is a disease whose progression cannot be well understood, even the cause of Alzheimer’s is a mystery to scientist and doctors. Most of the research that has been done on the disease only suggests that it is associated with tangles and plaques in the brain. The treatments that are available as of now only offer a small symptomatic benefit. None of these common treatments can actually cure the disease to the full extent.

In the year 2008,almost  500 clinical trials were working to find some solution for the disease. However, it is not sure if any of these trials will actually be successful in curing the disease.

2009 Update: Has the “cure” for Alzheimer’s finally been discovered?

Dr Robert O. Young, the Microbiologist and Scientist says:

“There is only One Sickness and One Disease, and this one ‘sickness’ is the over-acidification of the body due primarily to an inverted way of living, thinking, and eating… there can therefore be only one remedy and treatment, and that is to alkalize the body and break the cycle of imbalance, thus allowing us to experience the energy, vitality and true health we’re all meant to have.”
